Continental by Georg Jensen
Sterling silver hollow handle with stainless paddle blade Butter Spreader 6 1/4" in the pattern Continental by Georg Jensen. It is monogrammed (monos vary) and is in excellent condition.
Designed in 1906 by Georg Jensen, the Continental cutlery pattern was the first major cutlery range to emerge from the fledgling silversmithy that was established two years earlier in 1904. In designing Continental, Georg Jensen was inspired by the forms of traditional and centuries-old Nordic tools and implements. The lightly hammered surface enhances the design giving it depth and a unique beauty that is exclusive to silver.
Georg Jensen is one of the world's most significant silversmiths, who formed an international following due to his innovative and sculptural work and his collaborations with other very talented designers. He started in Copenhagen as a sculptor and goldsmith working his way into silversmithing. He was the first to blur lines between artistry and craftsmanship with his ornamental design in the early 1900's. In 1904 he opened his first shop and quickly gained a following, with those stating he "never followed fashion, he created it". In 1918 he opened a much larger shop and when he passed in 1935 he already had an international reputation for superb craftsmanship. He was reigned as "the greatest silversmith of the last 300 years" when he passed.
