Designed
by Edward C. Moore and patented in the year 1872, the pattern Persian
is a complex design with interwoven flowers, foliage, and geometric
shapes. Tiffany's records call this intricate style "Moresque". Edward
Moore, designer of this pattern, dominated the first era of Tiffany
made flatware and designed several full lines of sterling patterns.
Moore's father manufactured for Tiffany and upon retirement left Edward
Moore in charge at the young age of 24. In 1868 Tiffany incorporated and
bought the Moore Company, making Moore a Tiffany director and chief
designer and head of silverware operation. With his travels, he
experienced many exotic cultures and art which significantly impacted
his designs. After his death, his true genius was fully acknowledged and
he as then called "A Prince of Silversmiths.... easily the foremost
silversmith in the United States."
